Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - Review

At the risk of sounding stupid, I'd like to confess I'm one of those who always enjoyed Karan Johar's movies. Today's day was an eye-opener for me. Okay now, let's keep the prologue short & cut right to the chase.

Anushka Sharma plays the character of Alizeh who hails from Lucknow, lives in London & does absolutely nothing to earn a living whatsoever. In short, she's living a dream life. I'm assuming that she gets all the money to afford that kind of living in London from her rich dad, who, btw according to the story, doesn't love her enough. Kids, I tell ya! Alizeh, like in most of Anushka's movies & most of the movies today, is a protagonist who's full of life, badass, isn't scared of anything, lives life on her own rules & is every guy's dream-woman.

Ranbir Kapoor plays Ayaan who also stays in London, comes from a filthy-rich family, is passionate about singing but has been forced to do an MBA on his father's command. Ayaan has made peace with his life's prospects until...he meets Alizeh, who obviously, no just helps him discover his true-self & find his true love but also shows him how to live life.

Ayaan & Alizeh bump into each other at a party & become best friends immediately. Yes. They tell each other their whole life story, their heart-breaks, their respective father's bank balance and whatnot. What brings them together, you ask. Bollywood. You read it right! Both of them are die-hard bollywood fans and that's why we have to go through 150 minutes of either one of them or both of them communicating with each other in bollywood dialogues. Karan Johar's movies' dialogues...to be more precise. I quickly concluded that Ayaan & Alizeh are probably big time losers or creeps who do not have even a single person they can call their friend(not counting their respective bf/gf) cause ever since they've met each other they've fallen in true friendship and don't do a single thing without involving each other in their plans in the days to come.

The entire first half of the movie has already been given away in the trailers. Ayaan falls for Alizeh, who has already friend-zoned him and, in fact, is still in love with her ex-bf Ali(Fawad Khan) who dumped her two years back.

Meanwhile both the newly-met besties plan a trip to Paris(in Ayaan's private jet, sent by his unloving dad) to enjoy a weekend together. There they have a gala time dancing to old-cheesy bollywood dance numbers in the snow capped mountains(not to miss, Anushka wearing skimpy sarees). Paris gets a pooper when Alizeh bumps into her ex-flame Ali for the first time after her break-up with him. Ali, on the drop of a hat, confesses his true love for her, sheds a tear or two & tells her that he missed her and apologizes for being an ass two years back. It, however, doesn't strike our love-stricken and, perhaps also, dumbness-stricken heroine that if he regretted being an ass so much then why didn't he ever try to find/meet her before this? Alizeh, on getting her love back, kicks Ranbir out of her life and gets back together with Ali.

Ayaan, in turn, doesn't take it very well and this awakens the broken-hearted/talented/real singer in him...who makes his entry on the night of Alizeh & Ali's wedding where Ayaan is the only friend from Alizeh's side. Unable to take the heart-break, however, Ayaan storms out of the venue right before the wedding vows are to take place & goes straight to the business-class lounge of an airport in his tacky Sherwani. This, for some odd reason, doesn't even raise a single eyebrow. I mean you try going to a common-man's lounge in an airport, not even a business-class lounge in such a tacky Sherwani and notice how many eye-brows you raise in five minutes straight.

At the airport, we get to know that our poor hero Ayaan is not just a spoilt brat but also has an uncanny luck with ladies. Cause right after the heart-break our hero happens to bump into gorgeous Saba played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Saba is a seductress Shayara with blood-shot eyes(?). She doesn't mind one bit that a drunk creep wants to sit next to her & talk nonsense to her even though she doesn't even know him. Not only did she not mind listening to him, she also didn't mind lending him her sympathetic shoulder either.  Ayaan starts having a steamy affair with Saba, starts living in with her in her house which looks nothing less than an art-museum. During this time, he also meets Saba's ex-husband(played by SRK), gets inspired by his one-sided love Shayari and ends up making a call to Alizeh.

I'm sure you don't want to know what happens in the rest of the movie. I'd just run you through it very quickly. Alizeh, later in the movie, meets Ayaan & Saba where Saba realizes Ayaan still loves Alizeh. In spite of her own rules of not falling in love with him and having an open-relationship instead, Saba confesses she's fallen in love with him and dumps him by blaming him for breaking the rules!! Our hero, who has now gotten dumped twice, goes crazy and becomes an internet-sensation overnight for his grief-stricken songs.

Finally two years pass & the movie ceases to end and we see Ayaan bumping into Ali who tells him that Alizeh left him because he couldn't give her the love she wanted from him. He also tells him that he doesn't know anything  about her except the fact that she's somewhere in London. Our hero immediately goes to that once place Alizeh happened to take him once when they used to be besties - the place which she calls her Tanhaayi-zone, where she finds solace. This is another thing about movies. You want to make your characters look thoughtful or intriguing...voila! Tanhaayi zone is your answer!

Ayaan spends two days at that place without eating, drinking, shitting or peeing and finally manages to meet Alizeh at that very spot, only to discover that she's dying of Cancer! One would hope that now the movie would end. But no, Ayaan goes out of his way to make dying Alizeh happy, goes bald for her, spends every second of his life with her & fights with her yet again for not loving him back, only to get kicked out of her apartment once again!!!

The movie ends with Alizeh deciding to leave London forever & go back to her parents and Ayaan running for the airport to stop her from going away. And since it's a goddamn movie, Alizeh manages to get off off her flight to get back with Ayaan and they very cutely(NOT) end the movie with 'I friend you'!

Very quickly, coming to the actors...Ranbir puts up a great performance as Ayaan but sadly the story is so weak that we don't develop any emotions for him. Anushka plays the same role she's been playing in every movie. Nothing new there. Fawad Khan looks steaming hot & is only used as a placeholder. Aishwarya Rai looks stunning but something feels amiss in her performance. Maybe it was so short that it wasn't given any time to grow on the minds of the viewers.

With that, I'd like to spend no more time on this movie. Writing this post has bored me to death. You can imagine how bad the movie must have been! Re-reading this post makes me want to delete everything and save you from wasting your time. Thinking of posting this piece makes me want to jump out the balcony. But I think a Sorry would do for now. So, hoping that you'd forgive me & still come back for my next post whenever it is...here's the word of the day:

Capricious: Given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behavior; unpredictable.
I'm going to have absolutely zero difficulty in remembering this word cause this defines me.

Until next time!
