Pink

Pink - Probably one of the most awaited movies of the year. Probably one of the most anxiety-inducing movies of the year too, for some. I, for one, was very scared to see this movie & went with a strong heart & a vow to myself that no matter what, I won't cry or be scared.

But the movie hardly had any such moments. For those planning to carry extra napkins just to wipe off their tears (like my mom), just don't bother with it. There are a couple of scenes that do shock you, instil a sense of fear in you...but they'll pass in no time.

Cutting straight to the chase...Amitabh Bachchan plays a lawyer who's old & has probably given up on his fight with the society for making things right (at least this is what it looked like). But he doesn't think twice when he finds an opportunity to make things right at least for the three girls around whom the story revolves. He's often inexplicably shown lost in his own thoughts, even during trials, perhaps brooding on how low our society has stooped to bend the laws to suit a particular opinion of how things should & shouldn't be. With his trademark voice & undeterred looks, he often makes some very strong points on why our standards of benchmarking our women are wrong. Don't be surprised if you invariably find yourself nodding in approval during those scenes.

The three protagonists portray their characters just right. I feel that there's no right or wrong in the way you can show a woman's behavior in situations like these. It's instinctive & it totally depends on an individual. How Tapsee Pannu has been shown reacting to different events is something you can't even imagine. Kudos to the makers for keeping it as natural as it could have been & keeping the Bollywood masala to minimum.

The movie as a whole takes a moral direction to right the wrongs our society seems to be keen on doing today. They make some very good points that every human being should understand. However, if you look at the movie from the story's perspective...it loses its grasp on the plot a little too often. There's no mention of certain events which could've made the girls' side of the case way stronger. Like the threats the two other girls received (a video message & a photoshopped image), the threats which their landlord received & the molestation attack on Tapsee Pannu.

There are other things which were very filmy & could've spared the movie some more sense. Like the way they showed Amitabh Bachchan creepily staring at Tapsee Pannu in the park or creepily(again) staring into the girls' flat at night for no reason at all.

Keeping the story aside, the movie deals with a very sensitive topic and, I must say, has its heart in the right place. They touch upon an issue which calls for an immediate action in today's time. It received standing ovation from the crowd in the end, but the irony of the situation is that you don't see as many hands coming out in support of a woman when you need them the most. If only movies could change a society.

With that, it's time for the word of the day:

Germane: it means "relevant to a subject under consideration".

Until next time!
